Last night we heard the sad news that Sir Bert Massie has passed away. He was an incredible, determined, witty and caring man who spoke words and truth that hit you right to your core. As a disability rights activist he changed the UK and we are so, so proud that he became a DaDaFest Patron in 2008. Since that time he has supported us above and beyond expectations – speaking at so many of our events and having many one to one meetings with me to support, challenge and help with so many practical things too.
Today the world is a sadder place as we have lost an unwavering comrade. I know as a humanist Sir Bert didn’t believe in heaven, but I would like to think he is there together with the others we’ve lost this year – kicking ass and making things more open and accessible.
Rest in Peace dear man – you are irreplaceable and we will fight in the wake you have created. Our thoughts and love go out to his dear wife Maureen and the family.
