Body Mapping: Exploring Disability Arts From Indonesia

13th September 2024 - 13th September 2024
A group of disabled artists and practitioners are sat on the floor in a circle with pieces of paper in the centre.

Jogja Disability Arts is an organisation based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Using art and the cultural model of disability, JDA aims to create space and access for meaningful participation for disability artists in Indonesia. JDA actively advocates models for inclusivity and equal opportunities for disability artists through various programs, such as festivals, exhibitions, research and art collaborations.

On Friday 13th September, Nano Warsono (Visual Artist, Lecturer at Indonesia Art Institute and Board Member of Jogja Disability Arts) and Triarani Utami (Researcher, Learning Facilitator and International Partnership Coordinator at Jogja Disability Arts.) will be offering a presentation and Q&A session to introduce the work of Jogja Disability Arts to Liverpool. This will include details of their current the British Council funded PRISM project.

PRISM : is a research project linking Jogja Disability Arts (Indonesia) and DaDa (UK). The research examines the elements that make meaningful and empowering collaborations in disability arts. A key tool in this research are the Body Mapping workshops that have been delivered in Indonesia and in the UK in 2024.

The Body Mapping workshops aim to explore what disability arts and being a disabled artist mean to the participants. It is both a method of data collection and an intervention to create space for reflections and genuine interaction. One of the results of the workshop is visual data that captures meaningful stories of lived experiences of disabled artists.

This is event is free with limited places and will be of interest to: Disabled artists, arts professionals, students of creative arts and disability studies and anyone who’s curious about accessible and international arts practices.

Following the talk which will be in the Sandon Room, there will be time for informal artist networking in The Bluecoat Bar area.
